A First Formulation of ScEX: A Music Typesetting System
نویسنده
چکیده
This is a working paper on a music typesetting system, Sc E X, which is based on the notion of having music scores described in languages that are easy to be read by musicians and whose texts can easily be modiied by the user's preferred variety of text editor. Along with the architecture of Sc E X, two diierent languages are deened: one for describing voices separately, and the other for describing scores as a result from mixing diierent voices. Several examples of the use of these languages are given. Work on a graphic editor and on translators for the description languages is also addressed.

Representation and Manipulation of Music Documents in SceX
The problem of typesetting music documents using computers has been mainly addressed in two distinct ways (exactly as for normal texts): systems based on graphic editors commonly known as WYSIWYG (‘what you see is what you get’) and systems that use commands interspersed in the text. We will not enter the controversy about these two approaches, although we note that, for normal texts, TEX[1] an...
متن کاملAlgorithms and data structures for a music notation system based on GUIDO music notation
Many aspects of computer-based music notation have been previously discussed. The presented thesis deals with the process of converting a textual description of music into a conventional musical score that can be either printed or viewed on a computer screen. The chosen textual music representation language is GUIDO Music Notation, an adequate, human-readable format, which has been developed si...
متن کاملMusiXTEX, even more beautiful than MusicTEXfor music typesetting
MusiXTEX is a new music typesetting package derived from MusicTEX, but it provides more beautiful scores than MusicTEX did. While MusicTEX was a single pass package, MusiXTEX is a three pass system: the rst pass performs a rough TEXing which reports the spacings of each music section, the second pass is a computation of the best note spacings, and the third one is the nal TEXing process. The be...
متن کاملMusicHand: A Handwritten Music Recognition System
Current methods of digitizing handwritten music for typesetting remain far from ideal despite many years for music typesetting programs to mature. There are essentially two categories of programs in this area. The first of these categories contains programs such as Sibelius [Sibelius 2005] which make no distinction between note pitch and note duration, forcing the user to enter both pitch and d...
متن کاملTEX and music: An update on TEXmuse
For some years I’ve been working on a professional music typesetting system using TEX and METAFONT, called TEXmuse. This article has some background and examples of the main idea of the TEXmuse system which, as will be seen, is entirely inspired by the TEX ‘spirit’. This touches on the potentially disastrous problems of WYSIWYM for music typesetting, and on what similarly oriented systems have ...
